Our Story

martha avendano owner of the good candle

Meet the Owner

My name is Martha, I am the candle maker here at The Good Candle and this is my story...

I began making candles out of pure curiosity, and it became a passion. My co-worker Dorothy received a "soy candle" as a birthday gift from a friend who made candles out of her kitchen. I smelled it and I thought it was the most delicious smell ever!

Suddenly, my wheels began spinning and by the end of the week I had already purchased a couple of pots, a cooking thermometer and all the other supplies I needed to make my first "good" candle.

When you purchase a soy candle from The Good Candle you are not only supporting the American farmer and a passionate crafter... you are also helping to preserve our environment by choosing to burn all natural soy wax.

Why this little bird?

This little bird was hand drawn by our mother. I don't know why she picked this image but it was her very own signature of love.

My brother, my two sisters, the grandkids and myself could always count on receiving this little bird on all Christmas cards, birthday cards and gifts from her.

Our mother passed away in August of 2019 from ALS. Now we all carry this little bird to keep our mother close to us. It also serves as a reminder to be good, honest, loving, strong and kind because that is who she was.

This signature of love is now a part of my journey as I share it with you in all note cards, thank you cards and products.

In loving memory of Maria Teresa Avendano.

Hand Poured and made in small batches

Our candles are made of 100% all natural soy wax. Each candle is hand poured in small batches to ensure each candle receives the necessary care to become "a good candle".
All our containers are filled with all natural soy wax, two 100% cotton wicks and phthalate-free fragrance oil.
We then add the finishing touches with a simple yet elegant label.

Our containers are reusable...

When your candle has burned down to the bottom, scoop out any remaining wax with a spoon. Remove the wick discs and simply wash container with soap and warm water.

Our container is reusable for say... storing make-up brushes, toothbrushes or use it as a drinking glass or a vase.
